A recent decision by Edinburgh Council to spend at least a minimum 5% of its transport budget on cycling bodes well for Edinburgh’s unofficial title as the best place to cycle in the UK.
The Council has also committed to increasing spending on its cycling budget by 1% each year. The budget commitment will mean that in the next financial year, investment in cycling and other active travel projects will rise to £1m.
The Council has an aim to increase cycling to at least a 15% of the modal split of all trips by 2020 with current figures putting cycling in Edinburgh at around 5%-9%.
Edinburgh has a thriving cycling scene which is supported by initiatives such as Bike Station and Edinburgh’s cycle map Innertube, while there has been a rise in the numbers of people who cycle to work in the city.
The council has been keen to help those now buying bicycles by providing more bike parking. They recently announced a pilot project that will see new on-street secure bike storage trialled in up to six Edinburgh streets.
