Mark Cavendish starts the year on a high

Interesting article in The Telegraph on Mark Cavendish’s new year:

Although he has already attended Team Sky meetings and a training camp in Majorca, Cavendish has been prevented from wearing Sky colours until his HTC-Highroad contract ran out on New Year’s Eve.

On Sunday, however, he was out training in Essex first thing in a specially adapted Sky version of his world champion’s rainbow jersey, and happily posing for photos.  The rainbow jersey – five bands of green, yellow, black, red and blue which are also the colours of the Olympic rings – is the most iconic symbol within the sport as well possessing enormous commercial clout for both team and rider.

“Cav is also a complete traditionalist and loves the sport,” said Sky Team principal Dave Brailsford. “Of course he is excited about the Tour and the Olympics this year but I know for a fact that he is just as excited at the prospect of wearing the world champion’s rainbow jersey throughout 2012 at the events he competes in and trying to do the jersey justice.”

Cavendish said on Sunday:

“I haven’t been this motivated at the start of a season since 2009 the year I won Milan-San Remo.  There is so much to look forward to. Wearing the world champion’s jersey, the Tour de France and of course the Olympics.  Doing well in the Tour de France and winning Olympic gold are realistic achievable goals and that is what I am aiming at.”
